Beewrap & Food Storage
How to preserve food sustainably? Well, let’s begin avoiding film and aluminum paper. What to use instead you ask? You have many options to choose from depending on what you need it for.
Most of the things for which I used to use plastic film, I replaced it with Bee Wax Wrap. These are cotton cloth (most of the time) with bee wax (or another kind for vegan options) and it works amazing! You can use it to cover bowls with leftovers, wrap cheese, bread, sandwiches, fruit, and almost anything. It’s is very easy to get, or make yourself. There are many options regarding ingredients. The most important is to look for the choice that works better for you and your local products. Ensuring to use ingredients easy to make in your location, not jeopardizing the process of making it and enduring these kinds of products.
For pastry doughs that need time in the fridge, I try to wrap it with a cloth or I reuse any plastic bag I might have and worst case I use plastic film. Try to remember, we don’t have to be perfect. Imperfect sustainability is better than none.
For bowls with leftovers, I also use a plate as a cover or another good option for food storing are jars and reusing delivery containers. At home we avoid delivery but like everyone else, we also have our crazy days and might fall for it. And when we order food, I either clean the containers and reuse them (as containers to freeze food or plant-pots mostly) or they go clean and dry to the recycling bin.
Silicone Bags are also a good way to stock food. You can use them when buying in bulk with jars and paper bags.
The main idea of today is to learn about our options when saving food sustainably. Our main options are bee wax wraps, silicone bags, glass jars/containers, and stainless steel containers. If you are on a budget you can always re-use, re-purpose and recycle jars, food containers, and bags you have laying around in your house.
Please keep in mind that most of all the plastics wastes we’ve had so far are still out there. Take consciousness of your consumerism.
